For more than two decades, Jon Hickey has built a career rooted in the law and in the Western New York community he calls home. His experience spans private practice, public service, more than a decade working in New York State Supreme Court as a confidential law clerk, and service on the bench as Clarence Town Justice.
Rooted in Western New York
Jon Hickey is a lifelong Western New Yorker who grew up in Clarence, where he and his wife are now raising their two sons. His connection to the community has remained a constant throughout his life and career. For Jon, service has never been limited to the courtroom. He has spent years coaching youth sports, volunteering his time, supporting the legal profession and giving back to the Western New York community he has always called home.
Education and Early Career
Jon's path to the law began at St. Bonaventure University, where he earned his bachelor's degree magna cum laude, followed by the University at Buffalo School of Law, where he earned his J.D. cum laude in 2001.
After law school, Jon began building the broad legal experience that would ultimately prepare him for judicial service. His early career included work as an attorney and town prosecutor, giving him firsthand experience in the courtroom and an understanding of the responsibilities carried by attorneys on both sides of a case.
More Than Two Decades in the Law
Over the course of a 24-year legal career, Jon has experienced the justice system from multiple perspectives. He has served as a town prosecutor, represented clients in private practice, and became a partner and co-owner of a law firm. Since 2015, Jon has worked in New York State Supreme Court as a Confidential Law Clerk to a Supreme Court Justice.
That breadth of experience has given Jon an unusually comprehensive understanding of the work of the courts—from preparing and arguing cases to helping analyze the complex legal and procedural issues that come before New York State Supreme Court.
More Than a Decade in New York State Supreme Court as a Confidential Law Clerk
Since 2015, Jon has served as a confidential law clerk to a New York State Supreme Court justice, working closely with the court on the legal and procedural issues that arise in Supreme Court matters.
That experience has given Jon more than a decade of firsthand familiarity with New York State Supreme Court and the work required of the judges who serve there.
Service on the Bench
In 2019, Jon began serving as Clarence Town Justice, adding direct judicial experience to his years as an attorney and Supreme Court Law Clerk.
As Town Justice, Jon understands that the responsibility of a judge extends beyond knowledge of the law. It requires preparation, patience, impartiality and respect for every person who enters the courtroom.
His experience on the bench, combined with more than two decades as an attorney and more than a decade working in New York State Supreme Court, provides the foundation Jon will bring to service as a New York State Supreme Court Justice.
A Record of Service
Throughout his career, Jon has made service to his profession and his community a priority. He currently serves as Secretary of the Erie County Magistrates Association and previously served as a Director of the Bar Association of Erie County.
Jon has also remained involved with the institutions that helped shape his education and career, formerly serving as a member of the St. Bonaventure University Alumni Council and as a past board member of the UB Law Alumni GOLD Group.
His commitment to service has extended directly to those in need. Early in his career, through the Volunteer Lawyers Project, Jon volunteered his time and legal experience to provide pro bono legal assistance. Closer to home, he has been a longtime youth sports coach and community volunteer.
